The inaugural running of the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown took place on Friday 23rd July 1886 and was worth £10,000 to the winner. The 1884 Epsom Derby winner St Gatien (SR 2030) was beaten into second place by the Hardwicke Stakes, Cambridgeshire and Lincoln winner Bendigo. | |||||||||
